Fred's Piano Service

Fred Mudge, Proprietor and Registered Piano Technician

Fred is a Bruins fan, motorcycle rider, vegetarian, and registered piano technician, in that order. He grew up in Brookline, Massachusetts with an older brother and younger sister. Growing up, he taught himself how to play the guitar & piano, and sang for the Boston Opera Company.

In high school, Fred spent his time with the drama club. He also worked as a singing telegram, delivering balloons & gifts to sick children, adults, birthday parties and other special events. He attended Berklee College of Music in 1988, where he pursued a career in musical theater at first, but later changed his career path toward his love for pianos.

Yamaha Corporation of America began training him to become a piano technician in 1992. Throughout his training, he worked with some of the world’s best piano technicians: Terri Nimi, Yoshi Suzuki, and eventually, one on one training with Nori Soga at a concert artists service seminar in 2001.

Since the start of Fred’s Piano Service in 1995, Fred has been busy attending seminars & workshops to fine-tune his existing skills, and to learn new ways of becoming a better technician. In 2013, he finished his training as a Concert Artist Technician for Steinway & Sons. He attended the Yamaha Concert Artist Services Seminar at Yamaha in 2016, as well as Mason & Hamlin factory training in 2017. Fred completed his Steinway Spirio Training at the Steinway factory in the fall of 2019.

Today, Fred is highly regarded in the music industry. He regularly works for artists such as Tony Bennett, Harry Connick Jr., Danilo Perez, Norah Jones, James Taylor, Chick Corea, and many others. Fred currently lives in Boston with his wife and four children.

Joe Pagano, Workshop Manager

Joseph Pagano is a local piano tuner & rebuilder who has worked at Fred’s Piano Service since 2007. Joe grew up in Middletown, Connecticut where he graduated high school in 1953. He attended the University of Connecticut where he studied mechanical engineering for 5 semesters, then served in the army for 2 years.  Upon discharge from the army he worked as a draftsman, tool & die maker, and machinist.

In 1975 he got a good start in piano tuning and rebuilding under the tutelage of Ed DiPillo in West Hartford, CT. After gaining enough piano experience with Ed, he  worked for Watkins Brothers, a Steinway Dealer in Hartford.

In 1978 Joe and his family moved to Boston, where he worked for piano rebuilder Santo Falcone for about a year. He then partnered with technicians Bob Meyers and Martha Jackmauh to start Boston Piano Works.  He had his own shop in the South End called Tremont Piano. After that time, he worked for Chris Pleim , RPT, until joining Fred's Piano Service.

Joe has a passion for old machinery and tools. When he’s not at the shop, he enjoys reading works by Gore Vidal, riding on trains, and listening to music. He even finds time to tinker with his old tool-making machinery.

Joe resides in Greenfield, Massachusetts and drives over one hundred miles to get to FPS!  He frequently tunes the pianos of local residents and occasionally universities. He takes pride in being a handy, helpful piano tuner that’s been in the business for over 40 years.
